A Stark Project is an experimental space inspired by the visual art community of artists, curators, administrators, nonprofit professionals, writers, collectors, and fans.
Marianna Stark (pronounced mary-anne-nah) founded Stark Guide blog featuring original stories about Bay Area emerging artists in 2007. From 2008-2009 Marianna was executive director of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association. She is the former chair of SFMOMA’s SECA (Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art). She has contributed articles to San Francisco Arts Quarterly (SFAQ) and SFArts.org. In 2014 Marianna collaborated with Ernest Jolly and Chris Evans to produce ArtComplex, a popup exhibition featuring the work of 12 installation artists in a former Oakland doctors' office building. Marianna is currently president of the board of Berkeley Art Center, and board member at large of Oakland Art Murmur. Marianna holds a BA in Art History from the University of California at Berkeley.
Marianna’s love of the arts was sparked by her grandfather, E. Preston Ames, an Academy Award winning Art Director, and by Prudy Kohler’s History of Art course at San Francisco University High School.
In 2010 Marianna fell in love with Sam Perry and moved to Oakland where they live with their daughter Tay.
